IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE A TV/FEATURE CARTOON/ANIME (13 ep x 22 mins or 90 minutes in the case of feature) ON YOUR OWN. ANIMATION DOESN'T COME OUT OF ANIMATOR'S ASSES BECAUSE IF THAT'S THE CASE, WOW, ER I'D BE THE HAPPIEST PERSON ALIVE. REALLY. THIS INCLUDES FLASH CARTOONS AS WELL AS CG ANIMATION

Shorts that are made by so-called auteurs (I say this because some of them produce...er...crap) usually take in and around 3-5 years for a 5-10 MINUTE SHORT.

Well, here's what I got done today, it's still ruff. Done the olde fashioned way, ie, pencil and paper. :) I think the part before she switched to the Mantis stance is more inbetween, and slow down the part before she stomps the earth.

Either I TTLY SUCK AT DRAWING LAYOUTS or the Avatar BG artists are all really phenomenal painters (not that they weren't from the start, I meant in a sense that they were so good the layouts are all plussed). When I try drawing layout ala Avatar, the lineart, well, um, feel so bland. The perspective check out, so does the composition but uh it doesn't feel very..."layout"-y at all.

Animating Toph=FUN. Never really realized how tiny that girl is until you start drawing a full body shot of her in the middle of my sucktakular imitation of Fire Nation/Earth Kingdom hybrid place...thing.

I'm keying Rubi this afternoon. :D Should be fun, what with her dialogue and all. ("I'm a time lord, "Oh, not pompous at all then?")

Sooooooo this week: animating Toph and Rubi to "pimp" my demo reel. *crosses fingers*

Anyhoo, Dani and my fiance and my roomate and me went to paint Toronto red yesterday. I wish we hadn't eaten at that dumb "Thai" place that doesn't even serve proper Thai food. (they serve VERY good Chinese food but... ergh it's a Thai resto. Granted most ppl won't know the diff but hell...I want me Chicken Pandan and Pad Thai that actually was BROWNED not red)

This year I'm graduating and I have a message for the school.

Congratulations, you guys have totally ruined animation for me.

I come to Canada to learn about the joys of being an animator, and hoping that since you're the "top school" you'd be able to instill more of its values. You know what, you did not.

Half your staff are all bitter industry people who never reach what they have wanted in their life. With the exceptions of Bruno, Tim, Mike and Scott, what did I get out of everyone? Bitterness. Every damn year I gather optimism to be able to face the year, to become better, to be encouraged as well as being criticized. Do I ever get it?

Yeah, in Sound Design, Painting and surprisingly enough Sci-fi lit classes.

Not animation, not layout, not storyboarding.

Every damn time I try to be a good student, all that you do is say, your art is bad bad bad bad bad bad, do I ever hear anyone say, "Hey, this is coming along really nicely, keep it up kiddo."? Yeah. Only on those four classes. OK, I am not the best artist in the world, but a little encouragement goes a loooooooong way. Oh yeah, and trying to be nice to me, by saying, "Mmm hmm, this looks nice" and then suddenly turning around and give me a D really improves my self esteem.

Oh, it also doesn't help that with the exception of probably those four people and Doug you practice student favoritism. "Be more like X!" "Be more like Y!"

Which is bullshit.

Neil Gaiman writes like Neil Gaiman. Glen Keane animates like Glen Keane. Milt Kahl draws like himself.

I draw, write and animate like myself. I can't be Elli, I can't be Anna and I can't be like Mario. I have my own goddamn pace.

So long "top animation school" I'm glad I finally graduated, and no, you won't be getting glowing reviews from me.
